Islamabad High Court Issued Notices To PEMRA, PTA and Journalists in Contempt Case
On July 8, the Islamabad High Court (IHC), led by Chief Justice Amir Farooq, issued notices to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), and three journalists, including Gharida Farooqi, Ammar Solangi, and Hassan Ayub, in response to a social media campaign against Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri.
The seven-member bench, which also includes Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, Justice Babar Sattar, Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan, Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir, and Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz, convened to address allegations of a concerted effort to undermine the judiciary through social media. Notably, Justice Jahangiri, the subject of the campaign, was absent from the proceedings.
During the hearing, IHC Chief Justice Farooq voiced concerns about the government’s apparent lack of response to the campaign, suggesting potential governmental complicity. “The silence of the government in this matter is alarming and may indicate their involvement,” he stated.
The court has postponed further discussions until after the summer vacation.
