ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Muhammadmian Soomro has said that the government believes that independent and responsible media is essential to strengthen the socio-political and economic activities of the country.

He was talking to a four-member delegation of the Sukkur Press Club, which met him at the Prime Minister Secretariat on Wednesday.

The prime minister said the media would have to play its due role during the forthcoming general elections to help create conducive atmosphere in which people could exercise their right of vote in a peaceful manner. He said that the government would always support the expansion and development of media, simultaneously focusing on improving facilities for journalists.

Soomro said that the regional media had a significant role to play in promoting harmony and understanding among the people of different regions of the country. He said the regional media had a direct access to the common man at the grass-root level and it could help them to comprehend the national issues in a positive prospective. “It also has a responsibility to explain the benefits of various policies which directly affect the lives of common people,” he added.

The members of the delegation expressed the confidence that the government would be able to maintain the desired discipline and atmosphere before and during the general elections so that people could participate in this democratic process. They assured complete support to the government’s efforts to establish peace and harmony in the society. The delegation also apprised the prime minister of the problems of the journalists in Sindh and asked for assistance to strengthen their representative organisations as well as the press clubs. They also mentioned about the problems confronted by some of the journalists during the recent riots in the province.
