Internet Disruptions Reported Across Pakistan; Govt Says Firewall Situation ‘Blown Out of Proportion’
Internet users across Pakistan once again reported significant disruptions in connectivity, with many struggling to access global platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok. Meanwhile, Minister of State for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khwaja responded to a question about the internet firewall and issues in connectivity by stating that the issue has been “blown out of proportion.”
Users began experiencing slow internet speeds and intermittent outages over the weekend, with reports of disruptions peaking on December 1. Many WhatsApp users struggled to send and receive audio messages, photos, and videos. Similarly, Instagram and TikTok users reported difficulty accessing accounts and loading content.
According to Downdetector, an outage tracking service, there were 57 reports of WhatsApp, 86 for TikTok, and 161 for Instagram. These connectivity issues have exacerbated frustrations among users who rely on mobile broadband for communication and work.
The government dismissed reports of firewall testing and said that the lack of towers and infrastructure had caused the internet speed issues.
Speaking on Geo, Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja stated that a “web management system” has been in place for years to address cybersecurity threats. She downplayed the controversy, asserting that the measures were part of a broader initiative to bolster Pakistan’s cyber defenses against daily threats and terrorist activities.
Fatima attributed the disruptions to Pakistan’s outdated telecom infrastructure and insufficient spectrum availability. She explained that Pakistan ranks low globally in internet bandwidth, with only 274 megahertz of total spectrum. The minister announced plans to auction an additional 550 to 600 megahertz of spectrum in April 2025, aiming to enhance both 4G and 5G services and improve overall internet speeds.
Responding to citizens’ frustrations, the minister stated that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will be directed to investigate and resolve issues related to internet connectivity, particularly the challenges faced in sending media files. She added that the Ministry of Interior routinely collaborates with the PTA to resolve disruptions swiftly.
