Interim relief for newsmen this month
LAHORE- The chairman of the Seventh Wage Board for newspaper employees, Justice Raja Afrasiab (retired), said that interim relief for newspaper workers would be announced this month after consultation with board members.
He was replying to questions at ‘Meet-the-Press’ programme of the Lahore Press Club. Justice Afrasiab said low wages of journalists and noncompliance of previous wage board awards by certain newspapers were matters of serious concern for him. He said he would do his level best to give the final award within stipulated time of 180 days. He said he was collecting necessary data for giving an award, which would meet all ends of justice. “I firmly believe that God has given me an important responsibility which I am determined to accomplish to the best of my ability,” he said.
Media representatives explained their hardships due to low wages, contract system and non-compliance of previous wage awards by some newspapers and news agencies.
Pakistan Federal Union of journalists President I.H. Raashed and a member of the Wage Board was also present on the occasion.
