Inter-Ministerial meeting discusses television channels rules

ISLAMABAD- An inter-ministerial meeting was to draft rules for issuing licences to private television channels. The meeting was chaired by Secretary Communications Sheikh Akram and attended by Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and representatives of concerned ministries including Finance, Information and Media Development and Culture.

According to Communications Ministry sources, the inter- ministerial meeting discussed aspects of the cable distribution network for issuing licences throughout the country. Rules to issue licences for this TV transmission system and all the concerned matters would be finalised in the next meeting like conditions to issue a licence including fee and jurisdiction of a licence etc.

According to a decision taken by the federal cabinet Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) was authorised to regulate cable TV for issuing licences. This cable TV system will be only he had to receive and boost the transmission but not for originating the transmission.

The cabinet has set up an inter-ministerial committee comprising representatives from the ministries of Communications, Finance, Information and Media Development and Culture to review rules and the specific parameters that would become applicable to the issuance for licences.
