Information Minister Tarar Defends Country’s Internet

On January 7, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar asserted that the country boasts superior and more affordable internet services than many other countries globally. Speaking at the inauguration of the Media Cricket League 2025, Tarar countered claims of costly internet outages, citing improvements and dismissing criticisms as being politicised without substantiation.
“There were a few glitches in the past but now I feel this is more of a political discussion without evidence,” he said.
In a detailed address to journalists, the minister refuted a recent report from Top10VPN.com which ranked Pakistan as the leader in financial setbacks due to internet disruptions in 2024, with losses amounting to $1.62 billion. The report highlighted at least 18 intentional shutdowns, including three significant disruptions during key electoral periods, aimed to control information flow during protests.
Tarar, however, disputed these figures, saying: “You won’t find cheaper internet than we have here, look at the ads with the slogans regarding unlimited data, whether telecom or Local Area Network system.”
Tarar questioned, “under which parameter they have been calculated.”
“This was calculated by a VPN forum, but I believe the internet has gotten better and in the coming days, it will improve further.”
