Importance of photojournalism stressed

LAHORE- Pictures can have a lot more impact than a long news story but in our country very little attention is paid towards the training of photojournalists. This was stated by said Arif Nizami, Editor, The Nation.

Arif Nizami said that the value of photojournalism in communicating news item, is infinite but only a few people know its importance. A photo has more impact than the story of a thousand words, he maintained.

He was speaking at the opening ceremony of Photojournalism workshop at Lahore Press Club The workshop has been jointly organised by the Lahore Press Club. The British Council, Lahore, The Thomson Forum and the District Photojournalists Association. Other speakers included Badr Munir Chaudhary, President Lahore Press Club, F. E Chaudhary, a senior photojournalist, Sohail Mansoor, officiating provincial Secretary Information and Culture, Alun John, coordinator of the workshop and Dr. Robert Snell, Director, the British Council Lahore.

Alun John said that photo was an important part of journalism. The photographs tell different stories which need no explanation. Sohail Mansoor said government has done very little for the training of journalists.

He said that credit went to the Lahore Press Club and the Press Institute of Pakistan of Pakistan for providing working journalists with opportunities of improving their skills in their respective fields. He said that the workshop would go a Iong way in improving the quality of journalism.

F.E. Chaudhary said that the present photojournalists were not as competent as they should be. He said photojournalists should reach in time and cover the whole function or event. He said that modern photojournalists were mere button pushers. He spoke about the early days of photo journalism in India and Pakistan.

Dr Robert Snell while highlighting the importance of photojournalism said that the good paper was like a nation speaking to itself. He said that the role of TV is increasing only because of Photojournalism, He thanked the speakers, participants and guests for sparing their time for the workshop. The workshop will continue, till October 25.
