IHC to Hear Contempt Case Against Justice Jahangiri; Issued Notices To Journalists

Pakistan Press Foundation

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) will hold a hearing on September 19 to address a contempt of court case involving Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri. The court has issued notices to journalists, social media activists, and federal authorities, including the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), requiring them to submit detailed reports on the individuals involved in the campaign.

The full bench of the IHC, led by Chief Justice Aamer Farooq, will convene to consider the contempt petition against several individuals accused of participating in a “malicious campaign” against Justice Jahangiri. This case comes after a social media campaign questioned the legitimacy of his law degree following the cancellation of his degree by Karachi University.  Justice Jahangiri’s degree controversy escalated when Karachi University canceled his enrollment and degree, allegedly under pressure, after the university’s syndicate met in controversial circumstances.

Previously, on July 8, the IHC issued notices to PEMRA, PTA, and three journalists, including Gharida Farooqi, Ammar Solangi, and Hassan Ayub, in response to a social media campaign against Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri.

The Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) has announced its intention to file a constitutional petition against Karachi University, challenging the decision to cancel the judge’s degree. The petition is expected to argue that the university’s actions undermine judicial independence and due process.

Led by IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq, the seven member full bench will comprise Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb, Justice Babar Sattar, Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir, Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan and Justice Suman Rifat Imtiaz.  The court has also appointed the Pakistan Bar Council and the Supreme Court Bar Association, along with representatives from local bar councils, as amici curiae to provide expert advice on the issues of judicial accountability and independence.
