IHC issues notices to TV channels
Islamabad—The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday issued notices to Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) and private TV channels for re-enacting crime scenes in their programmes. Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui issued these orders on a petition filed by a local advocate Ch Muhammad Akram.
Who had filed an application with Pemra on June 9, 2015 to direct all the private TV channels to stop showing crime-related programs. “ Pemra could do that under its 2002 ordinance and 2009-amended ordinance”, Ch Akram submitted in his application.
According to the petitioner crime-related programmes and re-enactment of the murder or violence scenes were causing bad effects on women, children and elderly people. People feel scared and their nerves are on the edge of breakdown after seeing such programmes.
“At this point more than 50 private TV channels are presenting such programmes in which crime scenes are re-enacted and no action has ever been taken against any channel,” the petitioner submitted.
My application is still lying pending with Pemra while this is an urgent matter of public interest, said Akram Advocate.
The court after hearing his arguments, issued notices to private TV channels and adjourned the hearing with date in office.
