IHC directs govt to secure Aafia and her sons’ release
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court has shown concern over the two missing children of Dr Aafia and directed the government to enhance efforts for the recovery of Dr Aafia and her two children.
Single Bench of Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Aslam heard the Dr Aafia extradition case filed by Barrister Iqbal Jaffery.
Talking to the media, Deputy Attorney General Amjad Iqbal said that CJ has shown concern over the Dr Aafia’s missing children including nine years old Marriam and five years old Salman and asked to recover them.He further told that there is no extradition treaty between Pakistan and United States and said that Dr Aafia could repatriate through diplomatic way.
He also mentioned on the request of Pakistani government, adequate medical has provided to her and said, “the consular access has been granted to her and her brother has also met her”.
Barrister Iqbal told the media that the government had written diplomatic letter to the United Sates. He said if USA does not reply over the written notice, Pakistan should raise the issue in International Court of Justice.
He also mentioned that Dr Aafia herself told that she had abducted from Pakistan.
CJ asked the foreign office to present the detail of written notes in the court and adjourned the hearing till 1:00 PM
CJ heard more proceeding of case in chamber on the request of foreign office. After hearing, deputy attorney general Muhammad Amjad Iqbal and Barrister Iqbal Jeffery told the media about detail of in chamber proceeding.They also told media that CJ adjourned hearing for three weeks.
Ministry working on LG reforms: Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development is seeking different parameters to reform local government system with a view to make it more vibrant and ensuring representation of all strata, said a press release issued here on Wednesday.
The ministry has organised number of meetings and conferences to come out with parameters for reformation of the local government (LG) system.
The ministry has made all out efforts in formulation of inter-provincial LG ministers’ committee and a sub-committee of the secretaries of provincial LG and Rural Development Department under the auspices of the concerned secretary for formulation of consensus outline of the further local government structure in the country, it said.
The committee conducted several meetings to sort out the matter and held extensive dialogue involving the general public, media, donors, district governments and all stakeholders to arrive at consensus proposal for restructuring the local government system and civil administration.
The ministry also organised an international workshop on the subject wherein the experts and scholars expressed their opinion on the matter.
