KARACHI: With the aim to address the complaints of citizens, Sindh Inspector General of Police (IG) Allah Dino Khawaja inaugurated on Thursday the public complaint helpline 9110 at Central Police Office (CPO).

Addressing a press conference at CPO, Khawaja, flanked by Special Branch Additional IG Dr Waliullah Dal and other senior police officers, said the helpline initiates an integrated system at the law enforcement agency to speedily address public complaints.

“All calls made to 9110 will be recorded and monitored by a dedicated team, while I myself will look into the serious matters that are reported on it,” he said. “The system is interlinked with all divisions of the police across the province and intends to serve public,” the IG added.

People would be able to register complaints against police officers if they refuse to register their valid FIRs, don’t investigate the cases properly, keep someone in custody illegally, demand bribes or if they get involved in any other wrongdoing, the IG asserted.

He clarified that the police helpline 15 will still be working and the public should dial it in case of any emergency. “It is necessary that people belonging to all walks to life should contribute individually as well as collectively against crimes,” the police chief commented.

Police to install CCTVs across city

The IG told media that police department was working on a project to install 10,000 Closed Circuit Television cameras across the metropolis, in a bid to curb the street crimes.

The cameras, in addition to the existing ones, will be installed at different points in the city. The police have identified the areas with the help of reports lodged with the CPLC and police stations where street crimes are high.

“Street crime is a serious challenge and ordinary measures will not suffice to end it. A comprehensive strategy is required to tackle it,” he added, stressing on judicial reforms and improved infrastructure in the city.

He said that the police, within its available resources, were making all efforts to tackle street crimes that have become a nightmare for the residents. He added that recently a special task force was also established, which will patrol the roads and streets and take immediate action against criminals as and when reported.
