By Ahmad Noorani

ISLAMABAD: The country’s premier civilian intelligence agency, Intelligence Bureau (IB) on Monday declared on oath that it was not involved in the kidnapping and torture of The News journalist Umar Cheema.

IB Chief Javed Noor told the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the National Assembly that the IB was not involved in kidnapping or harassing journalists at least in the previous few months.

The PAC chairman, while probing the IB officials, had asked about the kidnapping and harassment of the journalists pointing towards the recent incident of kidnapping and subsequent humiliation of Umar Cheema.

Javed Noor made the statement on oath that at least his agency was not involved in any incident of kidnapping or harassing journalists. “I am heading the IB for the last 16 months and I am not only stating this here but also take the responsibility that the IB has never done this during my tenure and I will be responsible if any one proves that the agency ever remained involved in any of such acts,” the IB chief said.
