PESHAWAR: On the call of the Pakistan Bar Council, lawyers across NWFP observed ‘Black Day’ on Wednesday against the ‘manhandling’ and re-arrest of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan on the morning of Eidul Azha.

Like other parts of the province, lawyer bodies consisting of the NWFP Bar Council, Peshawar High Court Bar Association (PHCBA) and Peshawar District Bar staged a procession and reached Justice Kiyani Road while chanting “Go Musharraf Go!”

The NWFP Bar Council also held a lawyers convention on the PHC premises where presidents and general secretaries of all 24 districts were present.

The convention, through a resolution, condemned the reported manhandling and re-arrest of the SCBA president and demanded the caretaker government bring the persons involved to justice.

The lawyers termed the Constitutional amendments made by President Pervez Musharraf while lifting the ‘emergency’ on December 15 unlawful and reiterated that the Parliament was the only institution to pass such amendments according to the procedure laid down in the Constitution. “Any other means for constitutional amendments will be invalid,” the resolution stated.

Supreme Court Bar Association Vice President Saeed Akhtar Khan said the legal fraternity was united under the leadership of Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan and would not move an inch from their stance of restoration of the November 2 judiciary and the rule of law.

Khan said the nation would not pardon the political leaders if they failed to play their due role in ridding the country of “dictatorial rule.” In his speech, PHCBA President Abdul Latif Afridi, reiterated that lawyers would continue boycotting the judges serving under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) till January 10, after which they (lawyers) would decide their future line of action.

Afridi, however, called the January elections as “President Musharraf’s elections”. He regretted that general elections had already been “rigged” and that a majority of the seats had been allotted to the pro-Musharraf Pakistan Muslim League (PML) party.

“There is no share for Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif in the next government. They have to join the lawyers’ movement after Jan 10,” said advocate Afridi.
