Hearing of Omar Sheikh’s appeal adjourned

KARACHI- A division bench of the Sindh High Court (SHC), comprising Justice Wahid Bux Brohi and Justice Muhammad Moosa K Leghari, on January 15, 2003 adjourned hearing of the appeal by Ahmed Omar Sheikh, Syed Salman Saqib, Sheikh Muhammad Adil, and Fahad Naseem challenging their conviction by the Anti-Terrorism Court in US journalist Daniel Pearl kidnapping-cum murder case.

Defence counsels Rai Bashir and Abdul Rehman Katpar were not present at the time of the hearing and requested the court to adjourn hearing. Omer Sheikh, was sentenced to death and his three accomplices, Fahad Naseem, Syed Salman Saqib, and Sheikh M. Adil given life imprisonment, with fines Rs. 5,00,000 each or in default undergo a further five years imprisonment, by the ATC Hyderabad on July 15, 2002. The court also directed the accused to pay Rs. 2 million to the victim’s widow.

The same bench dismissed the state’s petition against the acquittal for four accused by the ATC-II court on February 21, 2002.

According to the prosecution, Sher Zaman, Asfandyar, Naimat, and Bukht Munir on October 1, 1999, who killed cop Anwar Kamal on resistance while looting commuters of a coach in SITE. They were tried in ATC-II and Judge Hameed Abro released them due to lack of evidence on February 21, 2002.
