Hackers Exploit WhatsApp Accounts of School Principals to Scam Parents and Students in Islamabad
Several school and college principals in Islamabad have fallen victim to WhatsApp account hacks, with scammers using these accounts to solicit money from students and parents. The Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) and the Ministry of Education have issued a warning, urging principals to inform parents about the scams and to take precautionary measures.
Dr. Mohammad Qamaruddin, Director of Urban Institutions at the FDE, alerted schools to the issue, and Islamabad Model Colleges for Boys (IMCB), I-10/1, shared a warning with parents. The message clarified that the Ministry of Education does not request payments via WhatsApp and advised caution against unexpected communication.
The FDE warned that hackers might directly contact parents, pretending to be principals and demanding money for fabricated reasons. Parents are urged to verify such messages and report suspicious activity to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) or Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
The increased reliance on WhatsApp for communication between schools and parents, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, has made them vulnerable to cyber threats. The FDE is working to address these security concerns and protect the educational community from online fraud.
