The life of Malala Yousufzai, who is the youngest Nobel-Laureate and an advocate for girls’ education, is being turned into a biopic titled Gul Makai. The poster of the Bollywood film, which chronicles the journey of Malala from her days in Swat Valley to her becoming the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner, is out and features actor Reem Shaikh as Malala Yousafzai.

The activist who was shot at for defying the ban on girls going to school is also the UN Messenger of Peace. She founded the Malala Fund in 2013, an advocacy organization to ensure girls’ education worldwide, while one of its initiatives Gulmakai Network supports the work of education champions across the world. Moreover, Malala used Gul Makai as a pseudonym when writing blogs for BBC Urdu.

Coming back to the poster, it shows Reem Shaikh holding a book in her hand. Half of the book is on fire and shows destruction, which certainly portrays the hardships that Malala had to face. While the moving poster brings forth Malala’s fight for education and peace in Pakistan, the tagline, ‘One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world’, is quite accurate.

Directed by Amjad Khan, some parts of the film have been shot in Bhuj and Mumbai and trace the then socio-political atmosphere of Pakistan. Gul Makai has an all star cast that includes Divya Dutta, Mukesh Rishi, Abhimanyu Singh and Ajaz Khan apart from Reem Shaikh.
