Govt vows to enhance media capacity

KARACHI: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is committed to help strengthen the media and enhance its capacity. This was stated by the Federal Secretary Information and Broadcasting, Mansoor Suhail.

He was speaking at a lunch he had hosted for the editors and senior journalists at a local hotel here on Saturday. The Secretary said that they want that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting should perform a meaningful role for fostering and of respecting the freedom of press. He made it very clear that the goal of the present government was to strengthen the freedom of the press and to do whatever was possible in that very connection.

“Our role is that of a facilitator”, the Secretary Information further remarked. He further stated that legislation was being undertaken in that regard. Mansoor Suhail said that the amendments of November 3, 2007, were promptly withdrawn and that the other rules and regulations were being improved.

He stated that the discretion of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting with regard to the code of conduct had been withdrawn.

The Secretary Information said that the ministry thought it appropriate to ask the print and the electronic media to formulate a code of conduct and also enforce the same themselves in order to also ensure the freedom of the press.

He said that one of the main objectives of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is to help enhance the capacity of the media.
