Govt has failed to protect journalists: speakers

ISLAMABAD: Journalists staged a demonstration outside the National Press Club here Monday under the aegis of Rawalpindi-Islamabad Union of Journalists and National Press Club to condemn the recent abductions and intimidation of their colleagues including Umar Cheema and Raja Saqib.

President RIUJ Ashfaq Sajid, its General Secretary Jamil Mirza, Press Club General Secretary Asim Qadeer Rana, senior journalist Hamid Syed, Umar Cheema and Raja Saqib spoke on the occasion.

Speakers on the occasion asked the government that instead of making tall claims of freedom of press, it should provide protection to journalists. They said that increase in incidents of attacks on journalists and their harassment reveal that the rulers have failed to provide protection to them. After each incident the government claims that the perpetrator would be arrested but never succeeded in doing so.

The speakers warned that if attacks on the journalists and their harassment were not stopped they would chalk out a comprehensive plan for launching a movement under the leadership of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists.
