Govt committed to ensuring freedom of press: Wasim

In a statement over the boycott of the Opposition from Senate, he said, actually, it is a matter of the freedom of press and the opposition members were trying to dictate the press.He said apparently, the opposition boycotted the proceeding of the House on the pretext that PIA distributed some briefing among the media persons in the press gallery. “The press has a right to take information or briefing from any one and publish for the consumption of public,” he added.

Wasim Sajjad said the press is the fifth pillar of the state and democracy could not function smoothly without a free and independent press.He said several allegations were levelled against the corporation in the media and parliament so that they distributed copies of a brief to present their point of view. Terming the issuing of the press release PIA’s right, he said the Article 19 of the Constitution also ensures freedom of press and flow of information.
