Government will launch new Television Channel on IT
ISLAMABAD- Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Dr, Ata ur Rahman has said that a new Television Channel will be launched to impart the education of Information technology to the masses.
The launch of new TV channel is aimed at promotion of Information Technology in the country to meet the new challenges, he said in his key-note address at the 8th Biennial Conference on Science and Technology.
The two-day conference was organised by the Association of Pakistani Scientists and Engineers of North America here at the Pakistan Academy of Science.
He said good efforts are being made in the field of IT sector and present government is committed to put money where it required. He was of the view that during last government a comprehensive programme was prepared but could not be implemented due to non available of funds. But present government is committed to provide money for the promotion of IT sector in the country, he added.
He said a large number of programme are being launched under Science and Technology Economic programme aimed at making progress in the industrial sector. High valuable products items will be produced with in next few months in the country due to these programms, he added.
He said Pakistan Science Foundation remained neglected during last fifty years and regretted that there was only 8 million funds available for research in one year.
Science faculties are being strengthened at the different places adding technicians are being trained, he said. He said programmes have been prepared to produce Ph.Ds in the field of science and 100 will be sent abroad every year for Ph.Ds.
He said multinational companies have made an investment to the tune of 12 billion -rupees in Information technology and telecommunication sector in Pakistan during the last four weeks.
Prof Ata ur Rehman said that 325 cities towns and villages a major portion of the population have now access to Internet and the remaining 25 percent population will have the access in the next few months. He said the government has substantially lowered the Internet rates, which are lowest in the region. He maintained that seven Information Technology universities are being set up in the country to promote IT sector. To attract necessary staff international advertisements have been placed aimed at selecting highly qualified educationist.
He said there is need to create high quality educational system in information technology to meet world standards. For this purpose a National Testing Service and Accreditation system will be in placed in the next few weeks
