On December 11, a widespread outage disrupted Meta Platforms’ services, leaving millions of users unable to access WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook for several hours. The outage, which began around 10:58 PM, affected users globally, including in Pakistan, causing significant disruptions.

WhatsApp users reported being unable to send or receive messages or make calls, while Facebook became inaccessible for many, preventing logins and uploads. Instagram users faced issues with logging in and updating content. The disruption affected users on Android, iOS, and desktop platforms.

DownDetector, a service monitoring platform, initially logged nearly 1,000 complaints, a number that surged to over 300,000 as the outage persisted. The disruption impacted users across regions including the UK, Turkey, the UAE, India, Latin America, and Pakistan. Many users turned to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share updates, post memes, and express frustrations.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone acknowledged the issue on X, saying, “We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now.” Meta’s status dashboard confirmed that the outage also affected the WhatsApp Business API.

Meta, which serves over 3.19 billion daily active users globally, has not disclosed the cause of the outage but assured users that efforts were underway to resolve the disruptions. By late Wednesday, most services were restored, although some users continued to report intermittent issues.
