Global experts to probe copyright violations

ISLAMABAD: The PTV management has resorted to underhand tactics to transmit unauthorised World Cricket Cup transmission to viewers through its satellite network to hoodwink the authorities.

PTV has only rights to transmit World Cup matches through its terrestrial network whereas it is using its satellite capacity and channels in a clandestine manner to transmit the cricket matches which is being downlinked under intense pressure by cable operators and shown to viewers. This is sheer violation of Supreme Court directions as only Geo Super is authorised to transmit World Cup Cricket on satellite and cable.

PTV mentions terrestrial channel under its logo on its terrestrial channel to present a legal face before the regulators and the Supreme Court, whereas it continues to transmit the cricket matches via satellite for which it is not authorised. This is done to maximize PTV reach and fetch higher advertising revenue.

Multiple satellite beams are being used for the purpose and one of the beams shows nil transmission to conform with the Supreme Court ruling whereas in another satellite channel the matches are shown which is downlinked by cable operators, under pressure, through a special arrangement.

Meanwhile, cable operators are being pressurized to distort the Geo Super signals in different areas. Geo TV Network Satellite capacity is also under attack at different hours to disturb the transmission.

The Geo TV Network management has approached ITU, other international broadcasters, right organisations to apprise them of the copyright infringement by PTV authorities and the illegal disruption of its satellite signal and its distribution through cable networks. Leading international official and private sector channel operators and regulators are members of such broadcaster representative organisations and illegal transmission, and degradation of right holders TV services is considered an international crime by such representative organizations. These organisations have blacklisted content right violators in the past.

Geo TV Network has requested these premier organisations like ITU and others to send its technical experts to monitor and rectify the situation as above and these teams will be reaching shortly.
