Islamabad : NADRA has recently tried to introduce a ‘Smart Card’ with a number of features that certainly warrant appreciation. I happened to visit the NADRA office along with my wife and two children last week for acquiring this newly-launched Smart Card. After I had made the payment and undergone the process of biometric identification, I was told that these cards could only be prepared for two family members since a maximum of 29 characters – including spaces – could be inserted in the card whereas our names comprised more than 29 characters. The staff suggested omitting some part of the names! The deletion of any part of the name would have made other documents like educational degrees and passports incompatible with the Smart Card.
I would urge NADRA authorities to please evaluate the efficacy as well as likely ramifications of a product before launching it. I would also suggest they increase the existing characters to make the project viable.
