German Ambassador Alfred Grannas on October 24 underscored the essential role a free press plays in sustaining a vibrant democracy during a panel discussion titled “Media Freedom and Democracy – Challenges and Opportunities.” The event, hosted jointly by the German and Dutch embassies in Islamabad, brought together diplomats, journalists, and civil society members to explore the critical connection between press freedom and democratic governance.

Grannas emphasized Germany’s commitment to supporting journalists worldwide through initiatives like the DW Academy, which offers specialized training programs both online and in Germany. “A free press is a precondition for a thriving democracy,” he said, explaining that Germany’s support for media professionals stems from recognizing their crucial role in fostering informed and engaged societies.

The panel discussion also featured remarks from Hajo Provo Kluit, Charge d’Affaires of the Netherlands Embassy, who highlighted his country’s support for grassroots journalism. “The Netherlands is committed to empowering journalists at all levels, which is why we are funding a three-year project through the NGO Free Press Unlimited to assist rural journalists in Pakistan in enhancing their roles as advocates of accountability,” Kluit said.

Moderated by prominent journalist and anchor Munizae Jahangir, the panel featured Pakistani media figures, including Ziaur Rehman, senior correspondent at The News International, and Maria Memon, anchor at ARY News. The panelists engaged in a frank discussion on the challenges facing journalists in Pakistan, including censorship, security threats, and the evolving influence of digital platforms in promoting transparency.

Participants acknowledged the growing risks for journalists, particularly in rural areas, and explored the opportunities presented by digital media to enhance accountability and transparency in governance. The event concluded with reaffirming the ongoing commitment by both Germany and the Netherlands to promote media freedom as a fundamental pillar of democracy.

Both embassies, members of the Media Freedom Coalition (MFC), reiterated that protecting press freedom is vital to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting informed societies.
