Gender in journalism Awards 2004

KARACHI — The winners of “Gender in journalism Awards 2004″ jointly sponsored by Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) and UNESCO, will be announced at a function to be held in Islamabad, on April 12, on International Press Freedom Day.

There are two categories of awards. The first one – Excellent Gender Sensitive Reporting by male or female journalist. This award will recognize excellence in coverage of gender — related issues and winners will be awarded Rs25,000. The second category is Out-standing coverage of any issues by a woman journalist. The award recognizes the competence of women journalist, who may be the role model for women in the profession of journalism, the winners would he awarded Rs25,000.

A very large number of entries in English, Urdu and Sindhi languages were received from all over Pakistan, for these two awards, a PPF release said on April 7.

They are: Rina Saeed Khan for her articles “Lambs to the Slaughter” and “Where the Women have No Name” published in the Friday Times, Rubab Aisha for her article “Jabri Mushaqqat Ki Chakki Mian Pisnay Walyan”, published in daily Nawa-i-Waqt, Islamabad, Massoud Ansari for his article “Marriage at Gun-point” published in monthly Newsline and Manzoor Solangi for his article “Sind Aurton Ka Khitta Raha Hay (Sindhi)” published in Daily Ibrat, Hyderabad.

Five finalists were selected in the category of Outstanding coverage of any issue by a woman journalist. They are: Shahnaz Ramzi for her article “Faith Dealers” published in monthly Newsline, Amna Nasir Malik Jamal for her article — “The Dark Side of Herbal Medicines” published in daily Dawn, Karachi, Soofia Yazdani for her article “Ghalaf-e-Kaba Ehd ba Ehd” published in Family Magazine, Shumaila Matri for her article “From Chine with Love” published in monthly Newsline and Rakia Mazahar, Bano Fakhra & Asrna Tabbasum for their article “Heroin: Ek Gharatger Nasha” published in Jang Midweek Magazine.
