Gender discrimination

Sir: Our people still believe in the conventional perception of men being superior to women. A man is considered strong, wise and the sole bread-earner of the family, while a woman is seen as a naïve and docile creature, with the sole purpose of obeying her man. Such a false ideology is not only propagated by men, but women too, due to the prevalent culture, have a similar perception. This culture is religiously practised in the rural areas of Pakistan.

Many women are killed in the name of honour. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) pointed out that every year a thousand women are killed unjustly. According to the research conducted by Thomas Reuters Foundation, Pakistan is considered the third most dangerous country for women.

Such empirical evidence should be persuasive enough to compel people to stand up and remove gender imbalances in our society.
