G-B govt to issue accreditation cards to journalists

Special Assistant to Chief Minister (SACM) on Information, Eman Shah, announced the upcoming launch of a media accreditation process by the Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) Information Department. Shah, speaking to the media after inaugurating the central office of the Gilgit Union of Journalists, stated that the accreditation process is expected to be completed by the third week of January next year.

This accreditation initiative will involve the establishment of specific criteria to assess the qualifications of journalists. Shah said that this process is intended to identify individuals who genuinely qualify as journalists, and those meeting the criteria will be issued journalist accreditation cards.

The main goal is to formalize and acknowledge the crucial role played by journalists in the region.Shah also disclosed plans for a G-B-wide convention of journalists following the completion of the accreditation process. Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan will distribute the accreditation cards to journalists during the event.

Shah added that these accreditation cards will come with various facilities, and the chief minister will announce several welfare programs for media persons. Highlighting the strides made by the G-B government in the past three years to bolster the media industry, Shah noted the positive impact on working journalists.

Measures such as streamlining payments for newspaper advertisements have provided more stable financial support for media outlets.The SACM on information commended the professionalism of journalists in the region despite the challenges they face.

He assured that the Information Department is actively working for the betterment of journalists, and advertisements for journalist accreditation will soon be published, addressing their concerns significantly.

During the inauguration, G-B Assembly Speaker Nazir Ahmed lauded the vital role of journalism in society, declaring it the fourth pillar of the state. He announced legislative measures to protect the rights of journalists in G-B.

President of the Gilgit Union of Journalists, Zohaib Akhtar, briefed attendees about the union’s objectives and progress, emphasizing its role in resolving issues and enhancing professional activities. The event drew a large attendance of print and electronic media journalists.
