Free-will marriage: Couple declared karo-kari, appeal for protection

KARACHI: A couple that married out of love appealed to the government and Supreme Court (SC) for protection, after they were declared ‘karo-kari’ at a jirga in Mithi tehsil, Tharparkar.

With the help of their lawyer, they demanded protection from their family at a news conference at the press club on Tuesday.

Naziran, the dolled-up bride sat next to her husband, Talib Husain, in a bright red bridal outfit. The lawyer read the couple’s statement as the two sat quietly since they could only speak Sindhi. The couple married under Islamic rules in Mithi tehsil but Naziran’s father was unhappy with the marriage, the lawyer read from the statement.

Naziran’s father requested to resolve the situation at a jirga. According to Naziran, Arbab Lutfullah and Dr Samoon, men from the former chief minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim’s clan, declared the couple karo-kari after the jirga. Her brothers were asked to give two girls as a fine.

The couple filed a petition in Sindh High Court (SHC) and the court ordered the family to stop harassing the couple. Even after the court order, Husain’s father, Haroon, registered an FIR against him for zina and kidnapping at the Mithi police station.

The couple said they have to move from place to place in the city, hiding from their family.
