Four private members’ bills introduced in NA

ISLAMABAD: As many as four private members’ bills were introduced in National Assembly on Tuesday, which were referred to the concerned standing committees.

The Rehabilitation Authority for Victims of Violence and Abuse Bill 2010 was introduced by Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Yasmeen Rehman, proposing the establishment of an authority to provide legal protection to the victims of violence including children and the elderly. Rehman said district governments should establish an authority to provide a “safety cover” to the victims of violence, children in particular.

Meanwhile, MNA Bushra Gohar introduced The Pakistani Citizen (Amendment) Bill 2010, seeking equal rights for citizens, adding that the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) and the federal Shariat Court have already sent their recommendations on the proposed bill.

She said the concerned committee should also take up the matter immediately, as it deals with basic rights of citizens. MNA Raja Muhammad Asad Khan introduced The Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill 2010, seeking the right of bail for those imprisoned for more than two years in an offence not punishable by the death sentence. He said such a law would not only provide justice to the people, but also clear the backlog of cases in the courts.

Meanwhile, The HIV/AIDS (Safety and Control) Bill 2010 was jointly introduced by MNAs Azra Fazal Pechuho and Yasmeen Rehman, to pursuade HIV/AIDS patients in the country to get themselves registered, in order to prevent the rapid spread of the epidemic. Azra said the bill also proposed that the provision of proper documentation and medical reports of HIV patients should be made mandatory prior to marriage.

Later, all the private members’ bills were referred to the standing committees concerned for further deliberations. The House also referred two private members’ bills to the committees concerned due to the movers’ — MNAs Naseer Bhutta and Justice (r) Fakharun Nisa Khokhar — absence from the House.
