Foreign journalist released by tribal leaders

PARIS- A Franco-Algerian journalist detained for a week by tribal leaders in Pakistan was released early Tuesday, the French foreign ministry announced.

Aziz Zemouri, 33 a journalist for the weekly Figaro Magazine, was seized last week by Afghanistan’s Taliban militia who then handed him over to tribal leaders in northwestern Pakistan.

“Aziz Zemouri was released this morning by Pakistani authorities,” foreign ministry spokesman Bernad Valero said. “He should reach Islamabad this afternoon and will then fly on to France on the first available flight.”

The Taliban on Tuesday were still holding another French journalist, Michel Peyrard, who works for the Weekly Paris Match.
