Film, Television Department to be set up at National College of Art (NCA)

LAHORE -Film and Television Department will be set up at the National College of Art (NCA) by September 2002 to cope with the growing need of trained film and TV persons at par with any where in the world, according to Sajida Vandal, Principal National College of Arts.

Sajida said that for materializing the idea a committee comprising prominent film and documentary producers like Sajjad Gul of Evernew Pictures, Faryal Gauhar and Shirin Pasha has been set up. She told that the preliminary work for the purpose has been started.

The Principle told that long and short courses for the purpose were in progress and it was because of the effectiveness of these courses that demands for the establishment of Film and Television Department even before expected time were increasing.

A four-week workshop conducted by Shirin Pasha, a renowned documentary producer, concluded a few days back, was a step towards introducing the subject at the National College of Arts.

A similar workshop had been held a few moths back which had been conducted by Faryal Gauhar, the famous TV star and documentary producer.

As a result of these courses the National College of Arts has gathered information and done a lot homework for execution of the project.

About the four weeks long course recently conducted by Shirin Pasha, she said that 33 participants from different walks of life had learnt a lot from this course about film making and directing.

She told that Agha Sajjada Gul proprietor of Evernew Studios would be providing technical assistance about cinematography.

He will provide equipment as well for the purpose so that the students may learn more about the art of cinematography, development of films, editing and dubbing with the latest techniques.

She hoped after the establishment of Film and Television Department, the electronic media will make much headway and play more effective role in providing to the masses information, entertainment and instruction.

She was of the view that the department will be a landmark in the development of film culture in the country and that the establishment of a network of electronic media was a dream of any country.

She told that in the forthcoming January, a French Film Festival will be held at the National College of Arts. At the festival French Films will be screened and some prominent film producers will also be here to provide information about filmmaking. Iranian and Japanese films will also be screened later at another festival.

However, Sajida Vandal said that the premises of NCA were getting shorter due to creation of more departments. She hoped that the Army would give the land adjacent to the National College of Arts and help the institution in setting up more departments at the college. She said that the recently established Multi-Media department was in progress.

She said that at present the college was offering a range of courses in different disciplines and all these were of international standards.
