The Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Cybercrime Wing has registered its first case under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), accusing a Karachi resident of spreading fake news through social media. The case stems from allegations of false information shared during a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest in November. The suspect, Saifur Rahman, is a resident of Gulshan-e-Iqbal Block 1. No arrests have been made yet.

The First Information Report (FIR) indicates that a Facebook account under the name “Saif Ur Rehman” was reported for allegedly engaging in anti-state propaganda. Investigators claim that the account disseminated fabricated news and derogatory statements against state institutions.

Further investigation uncovered that the accused was also active on X, using the platform to post similar propaganda against the state institutions.

The inquiry found that the suspect was using the Facebook account titled “Saif Ur Rehman” to spread false news and harm the image of state institutions. These activities constitute violations of Sections 9, 10, and 20 of PECA 2016, alongside Section 505 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
