Female literacy programme launched

KARACHI: A female literacy programme was inaugurated the other day here at the squatter settlement of Gulshan-e-Sikanderabad in the Keamari Town, conceived and conducted by the Ziauddin Medical University (ZMU).

The programme was a collaborative effort of the Gulshan-e-Sikanderabad Welfare Society and the Department of Family Medicine of the university. A community of 25,000 inhabitants near Shirin Jinnah Colony has already set up a primary healthcare unit with the support ZMU.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Vice-chancellor ZMU, Shahid Aziz Siddqui highlighted features of the technical support provided by the university for the under-privileged communities that run healthcare and education programmes on self-reliance basis.

Also speaking on the occasion, Shahnawaz Jadoon, a local councilor, said the area has only one government primary school and few private secondary schools and the area residents cannot afford the education provided by them. He also shed light on the problem of garbage heaps in the area and said local municipality is showing slackness in carrying out the cleanliness work.

Sabiha Khan and Ali Akhtar, President and Governor of the Rotary Club, respectively, also spoke on the occasion who had also extended material support for the female literacy project.
