Federation opposes Geo’s plea to club FIRs

ISLAMABAD: The federation on Friday submitted its reply in the Supreme Court over Geo TV’s petition and opposed TV channel’s plea to combine all the FIRs registered in different parts of the country.

Attorney General Salman Aslam Butt submitted the reply on behalf of the government stating that the apex court was not a proper forum to club all the FIRs registered against a private TV channel for airing blasphemous content so Geo TV’s constitutional petition should be rejected.

He said that it was not a violation of public interest and basic human right and registration of FIRs against the private TV channel was an individual matter. The reply further stated that these FIRs were registered in the different cities of the country after airing objectionable content in the morning show of the said TV channel and it was the jurisdiction of the high court concerned to discuss the matter.

The reply stated that under section 527, transfer of cases is in the jurisdiction of a high court not Supreme Court. Objectionable programme was seen all over the country and people’s emotions were not respected. The registration of cases at different districts against airing blasphemous content came under the purview of the high court and the concerned forum is available for hearing applications under Section 185 and 527 of the Criminal Code.
