FC beat up protesters, injure journalist in Turbat

By Malik Siraj Akbar

QUETTA: The Frontier Constabulary (FC) on Friday beat up political activists and also injured a journalist in Turbat during a sit-in outside the Makran Scouts Headquarters.

The protesters, including hundreds of women, demanded that law enforcement agencies release a recently arrested Baloch writer Ali Jan Quomi and his son Mujahid Quomi.

They were arrested on Friday following the killing of two FC personnel by the Baloch Republican Army. The FC personnel also killed an attacker, Mir Jan Meeral, a Balochi poet.

Karima Baloch, who led the rally, told Daily Times that the women had held a peaceful demonstration to condemn the arrests.

She said Ali, a diabetic, had been handed over to the local police, adding that nobody knew Mujahid’s whereabouts.

“Our people are tired of the constant harassment by the FC and the Anti-Terrorist Force. They are increasing their deployment in the area and causing problems for the people,” she said.

Journalists in Turbat strongly condemned FC personnel for beating up the local journalist, Irshad Akhtar.

An FC spokesman said they had to resort to teargas shelling only when the women attempted to enter the FC camp.
