Farah Dogar issue resurfaced in lower house

ISLAMABAD (January 29 2009): The issue of reassessment of marks of Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar’s daughter Farah Hameed Dogar resurfaced in the National Assembly on Wednesday with a call from the PML-Q to come to the real problems being faced to the people by avoiding the non-issues.

The issue was raised by chairman Standing Committee on Education Abid Sher Ali while speaking on point of order referring to the remarks of the Minister for Housing and Works Rehmatullah Karar on his open letter wrote to Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza. He said that the Minister passed remarks against him (Abid) in his absence on January 19, which he said was not legitimate.

He said that it was unjustified to ‘illegally’ increase marks of a student who is daughter of a PCO judge. He also staged a token walk out from the house to register a protest over the issue.

The speaker while taking notice of the open letter to her by the chairman standing committee on education regretted that the member should have met her at her chamber or make a call before issuing the letter to the media.

She said that it was inappropriate to address the Chair in such a language that used in the open letter and once again instructed the members to meet her for any issue at her chamber and avoid issuing open letters as it is unconstitutional, she added However, after a heated debate both the PML-N and the government, on the recommendation of the opposition leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan it was decided that the issue would be settled out of the House.

Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, earlier, said that all the members have high regard for the Chair and also lauded the past one year performance of the Speaker. Meanwhile, PML-Q senior leader Raza Hayat Hiraj while speaking urged the members to avoid indulging in the non-issues and focus on the real problems that the people were facing.

Referring to the case of the Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry was sacked in their past government’s tenure over a similar issue of his son but their party refrain to rise the issue. He said that Farah Dogar is daughter of the nation and she should not be discussed in the public in such a manner.
