Family of Slain Journalist Nasrullah Gadani Ambushed Following Justice Rally; FIR Filed Against Protesters
On September 18, the family of Nasrullah Gadani, a martyred journalist from Sindh, faced a violent ambush in Mirpur Mathelo following a rally demanding justice for his killing. Nasrullah was murdered in May 2024, and the family has since struggled for action against his killers. During the rally, unidentified gunmen attacked the family, critically injuring two members. Instead of arresting the attackers, authorities filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Yaqoob Gadani, Nasrullah’s brother, and other protestors, accusing them of inciting violence.
The attack came after the family protested in front of the Mirpur Mathelo Press Club, urging the authorities to apprehend those responsible for Nasrullah’s murder. Despite multiple promises from law enforcement agencies and intervention by the Sindh High Court, which had ordered protection for the Gadani family, justice has been delayed. The family members expressed frustration over the inaction, stating that despite multiple eyewitness accounts and evidence, the main suspects remain at large.
Following the ambush, the police registered two separate FIRs: one against the unidentified attackers and another against Yaqoob Gadani and others who participated in the protest. The Gadani family and human rights activists condemned the FIR, calling it an attempt to intimidate the family and their supporters.
Nasrullah Gadani, 40, was murdered in a targeted attack on May 21, 2024, while riding his motorcycle in Mirpur Mathelo. After initial treatment at a local hospital, Gadani was airlifted to Karachi for further care but died from his injuries on May 24. Known for his critical reporting with the Sindhi language daily Awami Awaz, Gadani’s death led to widespread protests across Sindh.
The Sindh High Court had previously ordered protection for the family on August 8, recognizing the risks they face due to Nasrullah’s journalistic work, which exposed corruption and organized crime in the region.
