Facebook mania

Sir: Facebook has quickly become a household necessity not only in Pakistan but the entire world. Not only is it popular among the youth, the community belonging to other age groups has grown a substantial fondness for the network. For some reason this fact upsets me, rather alarms me to some extent. It makes me feel as if there is a scientific chip intentionally implanted inside all of us by a foreign agency with a secret motive.

Someone is consciously making an effort to gather an adequate amount of data about each and every person on the globe. Some of us are so hooked on the networking site that we log on to Facebook as soon as we open our eyes in the morning! Throughout the day we tend to sign in multiple times just to update our location or mood or pictures, etc. Do not get me wrong, I myself am a complete Facebook freak. If I do not check my Facebook at least once a day I remain restless. However, I am not exactly comfortable with this fact. I feel like Facebook is controlling me, controlling us as a community! It is like a drug, we are all completely hooked on! Out of an estimated total of 20 million overall internet users, over five million belong to Pakistan and are also members of Facebook. The social networking giant added two million users from the country in the last eight months to cross the five million mark recently.

Around 3.4 million users from Pakistan on Facebook are male while the rest of the 1.6 million users are female. Seventy-six percent of these users from Pakistan belong to the age group 18-34. Facebook has contributed immensely in the factors that distract students from studying and finishing work on time. Do not be surprised if you see a newborn baby’s profile on your Facebook page. They need to connect with other babies too! It is my request to all the Facebook fanatics out there to recognise their behaviour as a hazardous addiction and start making amends by limiting their Facebook time and concentrating more on studies/work.
