EU to discuss The News, Geo TV attack with govt

ISLAMABAD: The European Union and Pakistan would soon discuss the recent incidents, including the “suspension” of the chief justice of Pakistan, ransacking of the The News and Geo television offices by police in Islamabad and the Third Generation Agreement.

Talking to The News at a ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome (European Economic Community), Ambassador of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union Dr Gunter Mulack and Head of Delegation Ambassador Jan De Kok said President Gen Pervez Musharraf has already promised that before the general elections in 2007, he would quit the office of the chief of the Army staff.

“Europe will monitor the situation from today onward. We will look at the steps of the government and the election commission regarding holding of the general elections. We all are aware of the fact that rigging takes place not only on the eve of ballot but the governments of third world start rigging months before the Election Day,” Dr Mulack observed.

Referring to the “demarche” of the European Union to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Mulack said this diplomatic letter elaborated that the EU troika discussed current developments in Pakistan, particularly the judicial crisis, with senior officials of Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry on March 19.

The troika heads of mission emphasised the importance the European Union attaches to the independence of the judiciary, especially in view of the upcoming election process, Dr Gunter said.
