‘Ethnic bias’: role of TV channel criticized

A provincial lawmaker of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Rafiq Engineer on Wednesday demanded of the government to ban a private news channel for hurting the feelings of people of Lyari with “racial offence”. Speaking on the floor of the house during the Sindh Assembly session, the legislator said that private TV channel (not Aaj News) disrespected the entire Baloch community of Lyari with a certain racial bias.

He said the Sindh Information Minister, and Pemra should take action against the TV channel and ban it for its parochial stance. He said the TV presenter who uttered some “unrepeated words” for Baloch community should also be fired. He said the TV channel lost its ethical responsibilities and targeted community which built the primary infrastructure of the metropolis.

He demanded of the administration of TV channel to apologise to the community for hurting the sentiments of Baloch community. The house raised chants of “shame, shame” and later all the lawmakers from either side of the divide stood to deplore the highly controversial conduct of that TV channel. Sindh Information Minister, Sharjeel Memon assured him that action would be taken against the TV channel.
