Environmental issues : role of media

KARACHI – Adviser to the Sindh Chief Minister on Environment and Alternate Energy Noman Saigal has said that to disseminate information on environmental issues with the judicious use of media, a series of seminars and workshops for media, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other stakeholders will be held to increase the level of awareness.

He was talking to a group of journalists from the interior of Sindh on August 21.

Saigol said though the total amount reflected in the annual development plan (ADP) for current year was insufficient to meet the increasing requirement of public awareness, viable and result-oriented schemes with the help of media experts would be initiated for its proper implementation.

He stressed the need for planning to tackle the problem of technical information, development of information system and use of this information needed for the development of environment section.

“The participation of people in environmental protection and improvement depends upon their being aware of the environmental problems and possibilities of how the changing state of the environmental affects their well being and how their lifestyle affects the environment,” he said.

He made it clear that the environmental management personnel could not work effectively without a quantitative understanding of environmental conditions.

Saigol said that they needed access to a body of well-researched information, systematically monitored and carefully documented data.

He said that the comprehensive environmental information, statistics and data system were indispensable elements to efficient and effective environment management programme.

It may be mentioned that under the ADP of current fiscal, a public awareness scheme of Rs. 1.5 million has been made to conduct various awareness activities for the promotion of environmental awareness throughout the province.
