ECP approaches SC to get 15-day extension

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Tuesday approached the Supreme Court for a go-ahead to extend the date of the nation-wide voter verification process after Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan assemblies adopted resolutions in this context.

Though, the electoral body’s last date of displaying preliminary voter list was March 20, the ECP issued no orders to its provincial election commissioners to stop the activity at 55,000 display centres across Pakistan or halted the state-of-the-art voter SMS facility.

ECP sources told The News that its legal representative Syed Sher Afgan appeared before the Supreme Court and presented the case and urged for 15-day extension in the date of voter lists verification, as was being widely demanded by the legislatures as well as civil society members.“We are anticipating SC go-ahead on Wednesday, as we will hate to see a repeat of 2007 voter lists disaster, when 37 million voters were identified as bogus,” sources maintained.
