CPNE, UNDP launch programme on climate change mitigation

Pakistan Press Foundation

LAHORE: The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has launched a programme to engage media for ‘climate change mitigation/adaptation project’ on Tuesday.

The objective of the programme is to create awareness amongst the media persons about climate change impact and dissemination of awareness among public, politicians and policy making circles to significantly increase the budget for climate change and to save the country from its negative impact.

CPNE projects and programmes committee chairman Dr. Jabbar Khattak addressed the first event of this series which was held at Lahore. He said they would be holding similar programmes in Islamabad and Karachi. Media persons from KPK and AJK will be joining this awareness session at Islamabad while journalists from Balochistan will also attend the session at Karachi.

He was of the view that though they are continuously hearing about the climate change and its negative impact but perhaps they do not have understanding of the threat properly and that is why CPNE has partnered with the UNDP to sensitize the media about it. Regional Finance Expert of Governance of Climate Change Finance (GCCF)-UNDP Asad Abbas Makin speaking on this occasion said that Pakistan stands in the top 10 countries which were most vulnerable to climate change in the world.
