CPNE slams attacks on newspapers

KARACHI- Zahid Malik secretary-general Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE) has expressed dismay and shock over a number of incidents of harassment of newspapers in Sindh in the last few weeks.

In a statement after-visiting the burnt offices of daily Balochistan Times and daily Zamana at Land Mark Plaza, 1.1. Chundrigar Road, he said it appeared as if “the Sindh press is under siege”.

Recent incidents with some other newspapers in interior Sindh and Balochistan Times daily Zamana in Karachi are source of concern to the newspaper industry, he added.

Mr. Malik urged the governor to ensure there was no harassment of journalists in Sindh so that they could discharge their responsibilities in these critical times without fear of victimization.

He said that at the next meeting of the standing committee of the CPNE, which would be held in Karachi, possible causes of the incidents would be discussed in detail.
