CPNE hails Shujat’s decision

ISLAMABAD -The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) has hailed tie decision of Prime Minister, Ch Shujat Hussain on withdrawal of proposed amendments to Defamation Law and making other related laws in the light of press freedom.

According to a CPNE press release issued in Islamabad on August 12,the Council has also expressed its hope that all the assurances made by the Prime Minister including the restoration of official advertisernents to Nawa-i-Waqt Group would be implemented immediately.

A meeting of the CPNE standing committee held in Islamabad on August 13 and presided by CPNE Senior Vice President, Altaf Hassan Qureshi termed the recent meeting of a joint delegation of CPNE and APNS with Prime Minister, Ch. Shujat Hussain as an important step forward for the government press relationship.

The Council, while welcoming, the restoration of Daily Jinnah, Islamabad in the Central Media List, thanked the Prime Minister for his instant decision on the issue, asdemandedby the CPNE. The Council, through a resolution, also decided to hold the annual general meeting as well as the annual elections of the CPNE on September 7, 2004 in Islamabad.
