CPNE, APNS condemn life threat to Zia Shahid
KARACHI, JANUARY 23 (PPI): The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) and All Pakistan Newspapers Society have strongly condemned the threat to life hurled at “Khabrain” chief editor Zia Shahid on the floor of the Punjab Assembly.
Taking note of the recent proceedings of the provincial legislature in Lahore, CPNE president Syed Fasih Iqbal and APNS acting president Hameed Haroon in a joint statement on Saturday requested the Prime Minister to initiate disciplinary action against his MPA Haji Maqsood Butt, for hurting the image of the PML government by his behavior in the Assembly.
They have also urged the federal and provincial information ministers to take note of the issue with respect to the policy of the PML government regarding the freedom of press and the threat to editors and journalists by forces in the executive and legislature.
The heads of CPNE and APNS noted with concern that the case of daily Muslim was dragged in the special committee of the National Assembly on the pressure of journalists unions and slandered out of proportion in the government-controlled media
The CPNE and APNS were of the opinion that the National Assembly was not the appropriate forum to decide employee employer relationship. Such issues should be taken up in the normal framework as provided in the law of the land.
