CPNE acknowledges lawyers’ role

LAHORE (October 18 2006): Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) President Fasih Iqbal has said that journalists and lawyers were two wheels of a cart and both of them were working for awakening of the masses. While addressing a reception hosted by Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Malik Mohammad Qayyum in honour of newly-elected office-bearers of the CPNE, here on Tuesday, Fasih said that Quaid-e-Azam was a lawyer and fought for the rights of the Muslims of the sub-continent.

He said that country was on right track until its affairs were in the hands of the followers of Quaid-e-Azam, but during military regimes governance has been weakened. He said that Quaid-e-Azam was aware of the role of journalism and got published Dawn and Nawa-e-Waqt. He said that journalists were backbone of the journalism; hence much more should be done for their welfare and uplift. At present a number of non-journalists have joined the journalism profession who neither knew the journalism nor aware about problems of the journalists.

Fasih Iqbal said that fortunately he was representing the body of true journalists and trying to bring this section of journalism up to the mark. The CPNE chief said that lawyers have a vast sphere and contact with the people in all parts of the country. They were struggling for the fundamental rights of the people and performing their duty well. He, however, said that journalism is also playing an excellent work for the well being of the people.

He said that judiciary was taking suo motu actions on the problems highlighted in the press. Except newspapers, there was no other institute, which is highlighting the problems of all sections of the society. He said journalists had to work in difficult atmosphere even they had to face hard situation, including killings and kidnappings. CPNE Secretary Wamiq Zuberi, Sajjad Bokhari, and others were also present on the occasion.
