NEW YORK: The Committee to Protect Journalists has joined the Alliance for Access-a coalition of Pakistani media groups, academic and student organizations, and telecommunications companies working to promote open access-in condemning Monday’s attack on the offices of Express Media Group in Karachi, according to a CJP press release. Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the Express Media Group office during the evening, but the motive remains unclear, according news reports. While no journalists were injured, two guards were wounded. The CPJ, the New York-based independent watchdog, noted that this was the second attack on Express’s Karachi offices in recent months, and called for enhanced security for news organizations in the country.

Asked for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s comments on the attack, his deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said the world body chief stands for the freedom of the media. “He (the UN chief) has repeatedly said that all journalists need to be able to go about their work without obstruction or fear of harassment,” thespokesman stated.
