Cowasjee, PTV official summoned in contempt case

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court Wednesday summoned newspaper columnist Ardesher Cowasjee for expressing “scandalous and contemptuous” comments in a television talk show on Tuesday night.

Managing Director Pakistan Television, PTV World and the Shalimar Television Network (STN) have also been issued notices to personally appear before the court on Monday.

Attorney General for Pakistan has also been notified to appear before the court. The office of the attorney general is, however, laying vacant. Chaudhry Mohammad Farooq, who was the chief law officer, has resigned following the dismissal of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif by the military ruler in a bloodless coup last week.

The television top man has been directed to produce the original videotape of the current affairs programme in which Cowasjee uttered the remarks. The court has asked senior counsel Sharifuddin Pirazada to assist it in the matter. Ajudge of the SC Justice Munir A. Sheikh brought the matter into the notice of the Chief Justice in an application and quoted Cowasjee’s comments he made in the programme.

“I am in full agreement with the opinion expressed by the learned senior puisne judge (a judge who informs his senior),” Chief Justice Saiduzzaman Siddiqui wrote in the summon notices.

The Chief Justice has turned Justice Munir’s application into an original petition which have been fixed for hearing on Monday, October 25.
