Court orders submission of charge-sheet against Mumtaz Bhutto

KARACHI: Judicial Magistrate, South, Syed Nadeem Hussain, has directed the Investigation Officer (IO) to submit the charge-sheet against Sindh National Front (SNF) chief Mumtaz Bhutto in a case pertaining to the latter’s alleged involvement in the attack on a Sindhi daily newspaper on the next hearing date fixed for January 22.

Bhutto was released on bail of Rs50,000 surety, while SNF media coordinator Anwer Gujjar was sent on judicial remand till January 22 from the same court for his alleged involvement of attacking the Sindhi newspaper’s offices.

Bhutto personally appeared in the court. His defence counsel, Naeem Qureshi, however, submitted an application seeking exemption from his personal appearance on medical grounds. The application was not entertained by the court.

A bail application of the SNF worker will also be submitted in the court on Tuesday. Another case of 13-E (weapons recovered on indication) was registered against Anwer Gujjar at the Brigade police station, FIR 12/2009.

Mumtaz Ali Bhutto, a cousin of former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, was arrested in his hometown a day after he was booked by the Frere police station, Karachi, over an attack on a Sindhi newspaper office in Clifton and threatening its staff with dire consequences for not carrying reports in the newspaper.

Mumtaz Bhutto’s name was not mentioned in the FIR and the sections mentioned in the FIR were all bailable offences. As such, he was released on bail the day following his arrest. Later, talking to the media, Bhutto condemned the government for political victimisation against him adding that the present government was a continuation of the Musharraf regime and all its policies were being dictated by the US.

He also spoke separately to lawyers in the committee room of the Karachi Bar Association (KBA) and said that he would lodge an FIR over the killing of Benazir Bhutto and requested lawyers’ support in registering the FIR against Benazir’s killers. He said that the murderer of Mir Murtaza Bhutto and Benaizr Bhutto was the same and he would expose all those faces who had targeted the Bhutto family.
